Early Life and Playing Career

Born on June 8, 1969, in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Andy Enfield showcased exceptional basketball talent early on. Attending Shippensburg High School, he honed skills that would later define his playing and coaching careers. Enfield pursued higher education at Johns Hopkins University, where he majored in economics and played for the Blue Jays men’s basketball team. His tenure at Johns Hopkins was distinguished; he set 18 school records and amassed 2,025 career points. Notably, Enfield set an NCAA all-divisions career free throw percentage record of 92.5%, successfully making 431 of 466 attempts. His academic and athletic excellence earned him induction into the Johns Hopkins Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. ​

Transition to Coaching

After earning his MBA from the University of Maryland, Enfield ventured into coaching, bringing a unique blend of academic insight and on-court experience. He began as a shooting consultant, which led to roles as a shooting coach with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks (1994-1996) and Boston Celtics (1998-2000). During his time with the Celtics, Enfield worked under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, further refining his coaching philosophy. ​

Seeking to broaden his coaching scope, Enfield served as an assistant coach at Florida State University from 2006 to 2011. There, he contributed to the Seminoles’ three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2009-2011), including a Sweet 16 run in 2011. His efforts in recruiting top talent and developing players were instrumental in the team’s success. ​

‘Dunk City’ and National Recognition

In 2011, Enfield embraced his first head coaching role at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). His second season (2012-2013) was historic; he led the Eagles to a 26-11 record and secured the Atlantic Sun Tournament championship. FGCU’s electrifying style, characterized by fast-paced play and emphatic dunks, earned them the moniker “Dunk City.” As a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, FGCU captured national attention by defeating No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State, becoming the first 15th seed to advance to the Sweet 16.

Tenure at USC

Enfield’s success at FGCU led to his appointment as head coach of the University of Southern California (USC) men’s basketball team on April 1, 2013. Over 11 seasons, he transformed USC into a competitive force within the Pac-12 Conference. Under his leadership, the Trojans achieved a 220-147 record, making five NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching the Elite Eight in 2021. Enfield’s tenure at USC was marked by record-setting performances, including the most wins in program history over various multi-year spans.

Beyond team accomplishments, Enfield was instrumental in player development. Under his guidance, USC had eight players selected in the NBA Draft over seven seasons, including notable talents like Evan Mobley (No. 3 overall in 2021) and Onyeka Okongwu (No. 6 overall in 2020). His ability to recruit and develop NBA-caliber players underscored his reputation as a transformative coach.

New Chapter at SMU

On April 1, 2024, Enfield was named head men’s basketball coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU). His appointment coincided with SMU’s transition into the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), marking a pivotal moment for the program. Enfield’s proven track record of building winning teams and fostering academic excellence made him an ideal fit for SMU’s ambitions in the ACC.

Enfield expressed enthusiasm about joining the Mustang family and competing in the ACC.
