Tom Izzo is not just a coach—he’s a basketball icon. For over two decades, Izzo has been the face of Michigan State’s men’s basketball program. With one NCAA Championship, eight Final Four appearances, and countless tournament wins, Izzo has built a legacy that places him among the greatest college coaches of all time.
But now, at 69 years old, many are asking: what’s next for Tom Izzo?
In a recent interview, Izzo finally addressed the rumors about his retirement—and his comments have fans, players, and analysts buzzing.
Retirement rumors surrounding Tom Izzo have been floating around for years. However, the buzz has grown louder this season. With changes in college athletics like the transfer portal, NIL deals, and shifting recruitment strategies, many fans wonder if Izzo is ready to step aside.
In his interview, Izzo was honest.
“I’m not done yet,” he said. “I still have the fire. I still love coaching. When I feel like I can’t give my players 100%, that’s when I’ll walk away. But that time isn’t now.”
Izzo’s response shocked many. Instead of hinting at retirement, he made it clear—he’s not going anywhere, at least not yet.
After nearly 30 years as Michigan State’s head coach, you’d think Tom Izzo might be tired. But he isn’t.
So what keeps him going?
He also admits it’s not always easy. “The transfer portal is hard. NIL is hard. But that’s part of coaching now. If I didn’t want to adjust, I’d be gone already,” Izzo said.
Most coaches move around during their careers. But not Tom Izzo.
He’s been with Michigan State University since 1983, starting as an assistant coach. In 1995, he became the head coach—and he’s been leading the Spartans ever since.
This loyalty is rare in today’s sports world. Izzo says he never had a reason to leave.
“Michigan State gave me everything. The fans, the administration, the players—they all believed in me. Why would I ever leave?”
It’s this connection to the school that makes talk of his retirement even more emotional for fans.
When Tom Izzo eventually retires, it will mark the end of an era. Here’s what the world of college basketball would lose:
After Izzo’s interview, social media exploded with reactions.
“Thank God Tom Izzo isn’t retiring yet. We need him in the game!”
“I’m not ready for college basketball without Izzo.”
“Izzo’s fire is unmatched. He’s not just a coach—he’s a legend.”
Others were relieved but still preparing for the day he steps down.
“Glad he’s staying—but we better start thinking about who comes next.”
“Can’t imagine Michigan State without Izzo, even if it’s five years from now.”
So what does the future look like?
According to Izzo, he’s still focused on winning. His goal: bring another NCAA Championship to Michigan State before he retires.
The Spartans had a decent season last year, but not a great one. With a strong recruiting class coming in, fans have high hopes for the next few years.
Izzo also says he’s focusing more on mentoring his assistant coaches, helping them grow for when the time eventually comes.
“I won’t coach forever. But when I leave, I want this program to be in great hands.”
It’s a question many are asking now.
Izzo turns 70 next year. That’s the age when most coaches consider stepping down. But based on his energy and passion, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him coach for a few more seasons.
Legendary coaches like Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) and Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) coached into their 70s. Izzo might follow the same path.
For now, he’s focused on the present—not the finish line.
If fans were worried that Tom Izzo might be hanging up his whistle, they can breathe a little easier. The legendary coach made it clear—he still has the passion, the drive, and the love for the game.
Retirement will come eventually. But until then, college basketball fans get to enjoy a few more seasons of one of the greatest minds in the sport.
Tom Izzo isn’t done writing his story—and it looks like the best chapters might still be ahead.
