Alan Wilzig’s story is not just about success. It’s about legacy, resilience, and relentless ambition. Born on April 20, 1965, Alan was the son of Siggi Wilzig, a Holocaust survivor who arrived in America as a penniless immigrant after surviving Auschwitz. Despite unthinkable horrors, Siggi rebuilt his life in the United States and eventually became a giant in the banking and energy industries.
By the time Alan was old enough to understand the world around him, his father had already built a fortune. But instead of handing success to his son, Siggi chose to teach him the value of work from the ground up. Literally.
Alan remembers being just five years old when his father placed him on his lap and started teaching him business basics. That moment left a deep mark on him.
“I knew I had to work for and with him for as long as possible,” Alan says.
Unlike many children of successful parents, Alan didn’t receive special treatment. After graduating from the prestigious Wharton Business School, he didn’t walk into a cushy office job. Instead, his father placed him in the bank’s facilities and construction department. It was a deliberate choice to teach humility and earn respect.
Alan’s first year at the bank was anything but glamorous. He worked with exterminators to rid the basements of rats and tried to keep pigeons from pooping on customers. The grand, century-old bank buildings had seen better days, and Alan was right there, fixing them.
“When I protested about the work and pay, my father told me, ‘You’re 22 years old. Half the bank has worked here longer than that. You’re going to have to earn their respect.’ And he was right,” Alan says.
That grounding lesson stayed with him. Over the next 13 years, Alan worked his way up, learning every part of the business.
When Siggi was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer, he stepped down. Alan took the reins. What followed was a textbook case in how to grow and exit a business strategically.
In just four years, Alan doubled the market capitalization of the bank from 365 million dollars to 700 million. A year later, he sold the bank in a 765 million dollar deal which was named Financial Institution Merger of the Year in 2004.
After leaving the banking world, Alan didn’t slow down. Instead, he followed his passions. He explored entrepreneurship, motorsports, and philanthropy.
For seven years, Alan raced professionally in IMSA, one of the top sports car racing series in North America. His love for high-speed precision is more than just a thrill. It’s a metaphor for how he lives life: fast, focused, and full throttle.
Alan has also invested in and co-founded various lifestyle ventures including restaurants, hospitality, and innovative wellness concepts. Always looking for the next big idea, he combines business with passion at every step.
One of Alan’s most iconic achievements is his private racetrack built around his estate in New York, known as Wilzig Racing Manor. It’s not just a home. It’s a fully functioning private racetrack, one of the only ones of its kind in the country. This passion project has drawn media attention and even celebrity visits, serving as a dream spot for motorsports lovers.
Despite all the success, Alan’s leadership style remains grounded. He believes in collaboration over command.
“Even if a strategy is your idea, don’t dictate it. Sell it to your employees,” he advises. “If they won’t buy it figuratively, there’s no reason to think customers will buy it literally.”
He emphasizes empathy, patience, and the importance of letting people grow at their own pace. “Don’t get frustrated or discouraged. Rome really wasn’t built in a day,” Alan says. He also fondly recalls his father’s tough love: “He wasn’t hard on me just for fun. He knew one day he wouldn’t be around. He wanted me to be ready for anything.”
Philanthropy has always been a big part of Alan’s life. Whether through donations, charity events, or using his platforms to raise awareness, he has remained deeply involved in giving back to the community.
Alan believes that wealth and success mean little without contribution. “Being fortunate means having the ability and the responsibility to help others,” he says.
