On July 4, 2024, the Summerville, South Carolina community was struck by tragedy when 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew lost his life in a fireworks accident. Known for his love of celebrations, particularly Independence Day, Allen’s untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fireworks and the importance of safety precautions.
Born on July 30, 1982, in Charleston, South Carolina, Allen was the youngest of eleven children. He grew up in a large, close-knit family, forming strong bonds with his siblings and parents. His upbringing shaped him into a devoted family man, a hardworking professional, and a beloved friend to many.
In April 2023, after years of companionship, Allen married Paige Morris, the love of his life. The couple had a son, Hunter Marion McGrew, who was Allen’s pride and joy. He was looking forward to the future, especially welcoming his soon-to-be daughter-in-law into the family.
Allen followed in his father’s footsteps, working in HVAC installation and duct work for over two decades. His dedication and expertise made him a respected professional in his field.
Outside of work, Allen was a passionate sports fan, particularly of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. His love for football was evident in his home, where he had a dedicated “Patriot Place” man cave filled with memorabilia. He also enjoyed wrestling, cooking, and watching “Game of Thrones.”
One of Allen’s greatest joys was cooking for his family. Thanksgiving and Christmas were special times for him, as he loved preparing elaborate meals for his loved ones. However, nothing compared to his excitement for the Fourth of July, his favorite holiday.
The Fourth of July in 2024 was supposed to be an especially joyous occasion for Allen and his family. Not only was he celebrating America’s independence, but he was also honoring his son Hunter’s recent engagement. Dressed as Uncle Sam, he fully embraced the patriotic spirit of the day.
As the night progressed, however, a moment of misjudgment led to a devastating accident. At approximately 10:30 p.m., Allen attempted to ignite a firework while it was positioned on his head. Despite warnings from those around him, the firework exploded, causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Allen was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:10 p.m.
Allen’s passing sent shockwaves through the Summerville community. Friends, family, and neighbors mourned the loss of a man known for his generosity, kindness, and love for life. His willingness to help others and his dedication to his family left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
A memorial service was held on July 11, 2024, in Ladson, SC. In honor of Allen’s compassionate nature, his family requested donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and the ASPCA instead of flowers.
Allen’s tragic accident highlights the serious risks associated with fireworks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over 10,000 firework-related injuries occur annually in the United States, with many incidents resulting in severe burns, loss of limbs, or even death. Head and face injuries, like the one that claimed Allen’s life, are among the most common.
