Amtrak has officially launched its highly anticipated Mardi Gras passenger train service between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama, offering a new way to travel across the Gulf Coast. This service marks a major step in restoring rail connectivity along this historic route, bringing excitement and convenience to both locals and tourists.
The Amtrak Mardi Gras train began its operations this week, bringing a festive and comfortable option for travelers. Running twice daily in each direction, this service provides a new travel choice in a region long underserved by passenger rail.
According to Amtrak’s official announcement, the train is part of a larger initiative to re-establish rail connections along the Gulf Coast. The name “Mardi Gras” pays tribute to the vibrant cultural identity of New Orleans and the Gulf region.
“This route is more than just a ride,” said an Amtrak spokesperson. “It connects communities, boosts tourism, and brings jobs and business back to areas previously isolated by the lack of train service.”
The Amtrak Mardi Gras service runs from Union Passenger Terminal in New Orleans to Mobile Station, with stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula. Each ride takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, making it a time-efficient option for both leisure and business travel.
Morning and evening departures are available, offering flexibility for day-trippers or those planning overnight stays. For ticket booking and updated schedules, visit Amtrak’s Gulf Coast Service Page.
With fares starting at just $20, Amtrak’s new service is a budget-friendly alternative to driving or flying. The train features comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and accessibility features for passengers with disabilities.
Local officials and residents have praised the new service. “This opens up so many opportunities for weekend trips, family visits, and even commuting for some workers,” said a resident of Gulfport.
To encourage early ridership, Amtrak is offering promotional fares for a limited time. Details are available on Amtrak’s promo page.
The return of passenger rail service is expected to boost local economies. Towns along the route hope to see increased foot traffic, which can help small businesses, restaurants, and hotels recover from economic slowdowns in recent years.
A report by the Southern Rail Commission projected that the service could generate over $260 million in economic activity over the next decade. According to Mississippi Today, local governments have also invested in renovating train stations to support the new service and improve infrastructure.
“Reviving this rail line is not just transportation — it’s economic development,” said a representative from the Southern Rail Commission.
The Gulf Coast once enjoyed frequent train service through Amtrak’s Sunset Limited, which was suspended east of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. For nearly two decades, residents and officials pushed for the return of this vital connection.
The launch of the Mardi Gras service comes after years of planning, legal hurdles, and cooperation among Amtrak, the Southern Rail Commission, CSX Transportation, and local governments. In 2022, a major agreement paved the way for infrastructure improvements and new safety protocols to allow passenger trains to share freight lines.
This success shows what can be achieved when federal, state, and local entities work together.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) played a key role in supporting the project through grants and technical assistance. The project received over $66 million in federal funding for station upgrades, signaling systems, and safety enhancements.
Local support was also strong. “We’ve waited 19 years for this moment,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “The community’s voice was heard, and now we’re seeing the results.”
The new train service not only improves regional access but also offers environmental advantages. Train travel emits less CO₂ per passenger mile than cars or airplanes, making it a greener option for travelers.
By reducing the number of cars on highways like I-10, the service may also help relieve traffic congestion and decrease wear and tear on regional roadways.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), train travel is one of the most sustainable forms of long-distance transportation.
The success of the Mardi Gras route may pave the way for additional service expansions in the southern United States. Amtrak has hinted at future projects connecting Mobile to Jacksonville, Florida, or expanding northward into Tennessee and Georgia.
The new route has already sparked interest among regional tourism boards and transportation agencies looking to link more Southern cities through reliable and scenic train travel.
Amtrak’s long-term vision includes developing a modern rail network similar to those in Europe and East Asia, with fast, frequent, and accessible service across the U.S.
The launch of the Amtrak Mardi Gras service between New Orleans and Mobile is more than just a transportation story — it’s a symbol of progress and regional pride. Whether you’re a tourist looking to explore the Gulf Coast or a local resident hoping for a better commute, this service opens up new possibilities.
