Why Thousands Are Marching Against Trump and Musk Right Now

Replay: On May Day 2025, thousands of Americans across the country took to the streets in protest against former President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk. The rallies, organized by a coalition of labor unions, progressive activists, and civil rights groups, were held in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco.

What Sparked the May Day Protests?
May 1st, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, has historically been a day for labor movements around the world. In 2025, the day took on a new intensity in the United States, as demonstrators voiced strong opposition to what they described as the growing influence of corporate billionaires and the political ambitions of Donald Trump, who has hinted at another presidential run in 2028.

Many protesters claimed that both Trump and Musk symbolize rising inequality, weakening labor protections, and the erosion of democracy.

“Trump is a threat to democratic institutions. Musk is a threat to labor rights. Together, they represent the power that everyday people are fighting against,” said Ana Rodriguez, a protester and union organizer in Los Angeles.

Where Did Protests Take Place?
In New York City, thousands gathered in Union Square, waving red flags and carrying signs that read “Billionaires Are Not Our Leaders” and “Workers Over Profits.” The rally quickly spread into a march through lower Manhattan, causing temporary traffic disruptions and a strong police presence.

In Chicago, protestors surrounded Tesla offices, calling attention to the company’s ongoing labor disputes. Many held banners with slogans such as “Elon, Pay Your Workers Fairly” and “No Union, No Peace.”

Meanwhile, in San Francisco, home to Twitter’s headquarters (now rebranded as “X” by Musk), demonstrators called for greater regulation of social media platforms and criticized Musk’s alleged suppression of dissenting voices online.

Union Voices Grow Louder
The protests were largely peaceful but powerful. Labor unions, particularly in transportation, education, and tech, played a significant role in organizing and mobilizing support.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) issued joint statements condemning both Trump’s previous policies and Musk’s labor practices.

“Elon Musk has shown again and again that he views unions as enemies. Meanwhile, Trump’s policies repeatedly worked against the interests of workers. We are done being silent,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.

Why Elon Musk?

Protesters accused Musk of anti-union behavior, unsafe working conditions in Tesla factories, and firing employees who attempted to organize.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that dozens of Tesla workers were laid off after launching a union drive at the company’s Buffalo plant. Musk has denied the allegations but continues to draw criticism for his public statements and tweets against unions.

Additionally, Musk’s management of Twitter, including mass layoffs, alleged censorship of certain voices, and controversial platform changes, added fuel to the fire.

Why Donald Trump?
Although Trump is no longer in office, many demonstrators expressed concern over his continued political presence and influence. His rallies and online activities have remained highly active, and some fear he’s laying the groundwork for another run in 2028.

His history of opposing labor unions, rolling back worker protections, and supporting large tax cuts for the wealthy made him a focal point for May Day activists.

“Trump built his empire on the backs of working people and then abandoned them in office. We won’t let him do it again,” said Jamal Greene, an organizer with Labor United in Chicago.

Counter-Protests and Support for Trump and Musk
While the majority of the day’s coverage centered on the May Day rallies, smaller counter-protests did emerge in support of Trump and Musk.

Some supporters argued that both men are being unfairly targeted and are champions of free speech, innovation, and job creation.

“We should be thanking Elon Musk for changing the world and Trump for fighting corruption,” said Maria DeLuca, a counter-protester in Florida.

What’s Next?
As the sun set on a dramatic May Day, many protest leaders called for continued action throughout the summer. More rallies are being planned around the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

The protests also sparked renewed conversation in Congress about union protections, tech regulation, and campaign finance reform.

Final Thoughts
May Day 2025 was not just a celebration of workers; it became a nationwide movement against what many see as the dangerous intersection of wealth, technology, and politics. As the U.S. heads into another heated political season, these protests are likely only the beginning.
