He served as the director of the Pratt Center for Community Development, advocating for affordable housing and sustainable urban development. Additionally, he co-founded the Fifth Avenue Committee, a nonprofit organization focused on social and economic justice in Brooklyn.

On July 30, 2024, Lander announced his candidacy for the 2025 New York City mayoral election, challenging incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. His campaign focuses on key progressive issues, including affordable housing, public safety reform, and climate action.
