The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the much-awaited Class 12 board exam results for the 2024–25 academic year, and students in the USA have plenty to celebrate. With an overall pass percentage of 88.39%, the results show a slight improvement from last year’s 87.98%. A standout highlight this year is the remarkable performance of girls, who have once again outshone boys by a significant margin, continuing a trend of academic excellence. Let’s dive into the key details, regional highlights, and what this means for students in the USA.
This year, over 1.7 million students registered for the CBSE Class 12 exams worldwide, with 1.69 million appearing for the tests held between February 15 and April 4, 2025. Out of these, 1.49 million students passed, securing the overall pass percentage of 88.39%. In the USA, students attending CBSE-affiliated foreign schools achieved an impressive pass rate of 95.01%, with 19,206 out of 20,225 students clearing the exams. This high success rate reflects the strong academic foundation provided by CBSE schools abroad, including those in the USA.
One of the most inspiring trends in the 2025 results is the consistent academic dominance of girls. Female students achieved a pass percentage of 91.64%, surpassing boys, who recorded a pass rate of 85.70%. This gap of 5.94% highlights the exceptional performance of girls across subjects. Additionally, transgender candidates in the CBSE system achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate, marking a significant milestone in inclusive education. This achievement underscores the CBSE’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students, regardless of gender.
“It’s heartening to see girls leading the way again this year,” said Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE Examination Controller, in a recent statement. “Their consistent excellence, along with the perfect pass rate among transgender students, shows the strength and inclusivity of the CBSE system.”
While the focus is on the USA, it’s worth noting the regional performance trends worldwide, as they provide context for the global CBSE community. Vijayawada emerged as the top-performing region with an outstanding 99.60% pass rate, followed closely by Trivandrum at 99.32% and Chennai at 97.39%. In the USA, CBSE-affiliated schools maintained their reputation for academic rigor, contributing to the high 95.01% pass rate among foreign schools. This success is attributed to dedicated teaching, structured curricula, and the adaptability of students in international settings.
In contrast, regions like Prayagraj recorded the lowest pass percentage at 79.53%, indicating areas where additional academic support may be needed. The strong performance of USA-based students highlights the quality of education provided by CBSE schools abroad, which cater to a diverse student body, including Indian expatriates and international students.
The 2025 CBSE Class 12 exams saw over 1.11 lakh students (6.59%) scoring above 90%, and 24,867 students (1.47%) achieving above 95%. Among students with special needs, 290 scored above 90%, and 55 crossed the 95% mark, showcasing the inclusive support systems within CBSE schools. A notable change this year was the introduction of 50% competency-based questions in the exam pattern, designed to test practical knowledge and critical thinking. To prepare students, CBSE provided sample papers, model questions, and teacher training programs well in advance.
“The shift to competency-based questions was a game-changer,” said K.R. Maalathi, CEO of Auuro Educational Services. “It encouraged students to focus on understanding concepts rather than rote learning, and the results show they were well-prepared.”
Despite the overall success, challenges remain. Approximately 1.29 lakh Class 12 students worldwide were placed in the compartment category, meaning they failed to clear one subject. These students have the opportunity to improve their performance through supplementary exams scheduled for July 2025, as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The revised framework allows Class 12 students to retake one subject to enhance their results, offering a second chance to meet their academic goals.
For students in the USA, accessing CBSE Class 12 results is straightforward. The CBSE has made digital marksheets available through multiple platforms to ensure convenience. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Students can also check results via SMS by typing: CBSE12 [Roll Number] [School Number] [Centre Number] and sending it to the designated CBSE number. Schools in the USA receive results via registered emails and provide printed copies to students.
For CBSE students in the USA, these results are a critical stepping stone to higher education and career opportunities. The high pass rate among foreign schools, including those in the USA, reflects the global reach and credibility of the CBSE curriculum. Students can use their results to apply to universities worldwide, with many institutions recognizing CBSE scores for their rigor and standardization. The success of girls and transgender students also highlights the inclusive environment fostered by CBSE schools, which is particularly significant for the diverse student community in the USA.
For students who didn’t meet their expectations, CBSE offers options like re-evaluation and supplementary exams. The re-evaluation process allows students to request a review of their marks by paying a fee per subject. Supplementary exams, scheduled for July 2025, provide an opportunity to clear compartment subjects or improve scores. These measures align with CBSE’s goal of supporting student success while maintaining academic standards.
The CBSE Class 12 Results 2025 showcase the resilience and dedication of students, particularly girls, who have set a high benchmark for academic excellence. With a strong pass rate in the USA and globally, these results reflect the effectiveness of CBSE’s educational framework. As students in the USA celebrate their achievements, they can look forward to exciting opportunities in higher education and beyond. Congratulations to all the successful candidates, and best wishes to those preparing for supplementary exams!
