After graduating from Reading High School in 1968, von Bargen decided to pursue drama—a decision that would define the trajectory of his life.

His interest in acting led him to Purdue University, where he majored in drama. It was during this time that he developed a deep passion for performance and storytelling. Von Bargen furthered his craft at the esteemed Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, an experience that laid the groundwork for his skills as a stage performer. Through his dedication and talent, he earned roles in various stage productions, eventually making his way to Broadway. His performances onstage, including Larry Gelbart’s Mastergate, were highly praised and earned him the Theatre World Award in 1990 for Outstanding New Performer.

Transitioning from theater to film and television, Daniel von Bargen proved himself a versatile actor, excelling in both comedic and dramatic roles. In 2012, von Bargen attempted suicide, shooting himself in the temple. Miraculously, he survived and was able to call 911 for help, pleading with the operator for medical assistance. This harrowing incident revealed the extent of his struggles, shedding light on the emotional and physical toll that life had taken on him.

Death and Legacy

Daniel von Bargen passed away on March 1, 2015, at the age of 64 in Montgomery, Ohio, following a prolonged illness. His death marked the loss of a remarkable talent, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable performances and an enduring influence on the art of character acting.
