Della Reese’s Untold Story: A Life of Music, Faith, and Hollywood

Della Reese was a woman of many talents—a legendary singer, an acclaimed actress, and a powerful voice of faith. Her journey from a young gospel singer in Detroit to a beloved Hollywood star was filled with challenges, triumphs, and an unshakable belief in herself. Reese inspired millions through her music, television roles, and deep spirituality.

Early Life and Gospel Beginnings

Born Delloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, Reese grew up in a working-class household. Her mother, Nellie, was a cook, while her father, Richard, worked in the steel industry. From a young age, Reese showed an extraordinary talent for singing. At just six years old, she began performing in church, and by 13, she was touring with renowned gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.

Singing gospel music not only shaped Reese’s vocal skills but also gave her a sense of purpose. However, life was not always easy. She faced hardships, including the loss of her mother at the age of 15. This tragedy forced her to become independent at an early age. To support herself, she took various jobs while continuing to sing in church.

Breaking Into the Music Industry

Reese’s big break came in the 1950s when she transitioned from gospel to jazz and R&B. Inspired by artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, she developed a smooth and powerful vocal style. In 1957, she released the hit single “And That Reminds Me,” which put her on the map.

The following year, she achieved massive success with “Don’t You Know?”—a song based on an opera melody. The single soared to the top of the charts, making Reese a household name. Over the years, she continued to release hit songs, proving her versatility in different music genres. She toured extensively and performed at top venues, earning a reputation as one of the best vocalists of her time.

Hollywood Success and ‘Touched by an Angel’

While Reese was a celebrated singer, she also had a passion for acting. She began appearing in television shows in the 1960s, taking on guest roles in popular programs like The Mod Squad and Sanford and Son. Her talent and charisma made her a natural in front of the camera.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, she starred in several TV shows, but her most iconic role came in 1994 when she was cast as Tess in Touched by an Angel. The CBS drama, which followed angels helping people in need, became a massive success and ran for nine seasons. Reese’s performance as the wise and compassionate Tess earned her Emmy nominations and the love of audiences worldwide.

Beyond acting, Reese also became a producer and mentor, helping young artists navigate the entertainment industry. Her influence in Hollywood went beyond just her performances—she paved the way for future generations of Black actresses.

Faith, Challenges, and Overcoming Adversity

Reese’s faith was an essential part of her life. In addition to performing gospel music, she became an ordained minister in the 1980s. She founded the Understanding Principles for Better Living Church in Los Angeles, where she preached about love, faith, and personal growth.

Despite her success, Reese faced several personal and health challenges. She suffered from type 2 diabetes, which led to multiple health complications. However, she used her struggles to raise awareness, becoming an advocate for diabetes education. She also endured the tragic loss of her daughter, which deeply affected her but strengthened her faith even more.

Legacy and Lasting Influence

Della Reese passed away on November 19, 2017, at the age of 86. Her death was mourned by fans, fellow actors, and musicians who remembered her as a trailblazer and a source of inspiration.

Her legacy lives on through her music, films, and television work. She broke racial and gender barriers in the entertainment industry and remained true to herself through every challenge.
