IKEA, the world-renowned Swedish furniture and home goods brand, has officially announced plans to open several new stores across the United States and other global markets in 2025 and 2026. With a strategic focus on expanding its urban footprint and improving accessibility for customers, this move represents one of IKEA’s most ambitious growth phases in recent years.
According to the official press release from IKEA USA, the company aims to enhance its omnichannel shopping experience while launching new store formats that are smaller and more convenient—perfectly tailored for urban dwellers.
In line with changing consumer behavior, IKEA has shifted from its traditional large-format stores to introducing smaller, more flexible city stores and planning studios. These new store types will allow the brand to enter densely populated areas where traditional warehouse-sized outlets are not feasible.
Retail experts say IKEA’s expansion aligns well with post-pandemic urbanization trends, where customers prefer quick, efficient shopping experiences with fast delivery and local accessibility.
“Customers no longer need to drive for hours to visit an IKEA. We are bringing IKEA closer to where people live, work, and travel,” said Javier Quiñones, CEO & Chief Sustainability Officer at IKEA U.S.
Though IKEA has not released a complete list of new store locations, officials confirmed that several major U.S. cities are already in the final planning phase. Among the likely cities are:
Globally, IKEA will also be expanding in countries like India, Australia, and Canada. The company plans to open at least 50 new locations over the next two years, which will include a combination of full-size stores, planning studios, and pickup points.
In 2023, IKEA successfully launched new planning studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles, which proved popular with urban customers. Based on this success, the brand is optimistic about scaling similar formats in more locations.
Sustainability continues to be a core value in IKEA’s global expansion. Every new store will be built with energy-efficient designs and sustainable materials. Moreover, IKEA plans to power its new locations with renewable energy and ensure electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are available at most sites.
The brand has also committed to reducing its carbon footprint by making its supply chain greener. The stores will use electric delivery trucks and emphasize eco-friendly packaging.

IKEA’s expansion is also expected to significantly contribute to job creation. Each new location will employ between 100–300 workers, including roles in customer service, logistics, design consulting, and store management. The move will generate thousands of new jobs across the U.S. and internationally.
IKEA has consistently ranked as a top employer and offers competitive pay, benefits, and opportunities for internal growth. The company is also known for its inclusive workplace culture.
Economic analysts believe this expansion could further stimulate local economies by attracting nearby businesses and increasing consumer footfall.
As part of its growth strategy, IKEA is also investing in digital transformation. The new stores will be fully integrated with IKEA’s online systems, allowing customers to plan their home setups virtually and pick up products in-store or at designated lockers.
The company recently rolled out AI-driven room planning tools and augmented reality (AR) experiences on its app to help users visualize products in their homes before buying.
Customers can explore these tools on the IKEA App and Planning Tools page.
IKEA has pledged to engage with communities before setting up new stores. The company will host planning events, pop-up exhibitions, and customer feedback sessions to understand local needs.
In line with its “People and Planet Positive” strategy, IKEA will also invest in local social initiatives such as education programs, green spaces, and youth training workshops.
Quiñones emphasized, “We are not just opening stores; we are becoming part of the community. We want to be a brand that contributes positively to people’s lives.”
IKEA opened its first U.S. store in 1985 in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Since then, the brand has grown steadily, now operating more than 50 stores in the U.S. alone. Recent years saw a slowdown due to global supply chain disruptions, but 2023 and 2024 brought renewed momentum.
The latest expansion reflects renewed consumer confidence and IKEA’s long-term vision to become a more accessible and responsible retailer.
For shoppers, this expansion means more convenience, faster delivery, and enhanced service options. With more planning studios and smaller outlets opening up, customers can expect curated services that focus on interior design, small-space solutions, and personalized consultations.

IKEA’s ambitious plans for 2025 and 2026 not only promise physical growth but also signify the brand’s deeper commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. With new stores, enhanced tech, and a people-first approach, IKEA is clearly positioning itself to meet the modern consumer’s evolving needs.
Whether you’re planning your first apartment, upgrading your home, or just love browsing the iconic blue-and-yellow halls, chances are an IKEA might soon be opening near you.
