John Bittrolff is a convicted murderer from Long Island, New York, whose case has sparked speculation about possible connections to other unsolved crimes, including the infamous Gilgo Beach murders. In 2017, he was convicted for the brutal killings of two women in the early 1990s, thanks to DNA evidence. However, his name continues to surface in discussions surrounding other unsolved cases, leaving many to wonder if his crimes extend beyond those for which he was convicted.
John Bittrolff was born on July 1, 1966, and lived in Manorville, Long Island, working as a carpenter. He was married and had children, living a seemingly normal suburban life. However, this ordinary facade masked a dark reality—one that would take decades to uncover.
On November 2, 1993, the body of 31-year-old Rita Tangredi was found in East Patchogue, Long Island. She had been brutally beaten and strangled, her body discarded in a wooded area. Tangredi was known to law enforcement as a sex worker, making her a vulnerable target.
A few months later, on January 30, 1994, 20-year-old Colleen McNamee’s body was discovered in a similar fashion in Shirley, near the William Floyd Parkway. Like Tangredi, she had been beaten and strangled, with evidence suggesting she had been posed after death.
For years, these murders remained unsolved, frustrating investigators and leaving families without closure.
In 2013, a major break came in the case. John Bittrolff’s brother, Timothy, was convicted for violating an order of protection, requiring him to submit a DNA sample to a state database. His DNA partially matched evidence found on the bodies of Tangredi and McNamee, suggesting a close familial relationship to the perpetrator. This led investigators directly to John Bittrolff.
After obtaining a DNA sample from Bittrolff, authorities confirmed a match. He was arrested in July 2014 and charged with the murders of Tangredi and McNamee.
Bittrolff’s trial began in 2017. The prosecution presented the DNA evidence as the central piece of their case, arguing that it definitively placed him at the crime scenes. The jury found Bittrolff guilty of both murders, and he was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.
While his conviction brought justice for Tangredi and McNamee, it also raised further questions: Was he responsible for more murders?
Following Bittrolff’s conviction, prosecutors suggested he might be linked to other unsolved cases, particularly the notorious Gilgo Beach murders. This case involved the discovery of multiple bodies along the South Shore of Long Island, many of whom were sex workers.
In 2023, Rex Heuermann was arrested in connection with several of the Gilgo Beach murders. His arrest raised questions about whether Bittrolff had been wrongly suspected of those crimes.
After Heuermann’s arrest, Bittrolff’s attorneys requested a review of his conviction, arguing that similarities between the two cases might indicate Heuermann, not Bittrolff, was responsible for the murders of Tangredi and McNamee. However, as of now, law enforcement has not revisited Bittrolff’s case, maintaining confidence in his conviction.
John Bittrolff’s case is a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary communities. While DNA evidence conclusively linked him to two murders, ongoing investigations continue to explore whether he was involved in other unsolved crimes. With the recent arrest of Rex Heuermann, the search for answers in the Gilgo Beach case—and the true extent of Bittrolff’s crimes—continues.
