Mystery Deepens as Averett Professor Goes Missing—Clues Left in Her Car

The small college town of Danville, Virginia, is in shock as a well-known professor from Averett University has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Faculty, students, and local authorities are now in a desperate search, hoping for any sign that could lead to the professor’s safe return.

The Disappearance

Dr. Rebecca “Becky” Monroe, a 43-year-old associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Averett University, was last seen on Thursday afternoon, leaving her office around 4:15 p.m. She told a colleague she was going home to rest before preparing materials for a student workshop the next day. She never made it.

According to police, her phone last pinged near the southern edge of Danville, close to a wooded area known for hiking and biking trails. Her car, a silver Toyota Camry, was found early Friday morning, parked on the side of the road near Hemlock Creek Trail, with her purse and laptop still inside.

“There’s no sign of a struggle in or around the vehicle,” said Danville Police Chief Philip Matthews during a Saturday press conference. “But obviously, we are treating this as a very serious case.”

Who Is Dr. Monroe?

Dr. Monroe has taught at Averett for nearly 12 years and is beloved by students and colleagues. Known for her kind demeanor and passion for mental health advocacy, she also worked closely with student-athletes and first-year students, helping them adjust to college life.

“She’s one of those professors who remembers your name, even years later,” said Lauren Kim, a 2023 graduate. “She really listens, and she makes you feel like you matter.”

In addition to her teaching, Dr. Monroe volunteered at a local crisis center and was involved in outreach programs for young women facing emotional challenges.

“She gives her all,” said fellow professor and close friend Dr. Maria Jenkins. “Whether it’s in the classroom or the community, Becky always shows up. That’s why this doesn’t make sense.”

As of Monday morning, the FBI has joined the investigation to assist with digital forensics and mapping Dr. Monroe’s last known movements. Authorities are reviewing footage from nearby traffic and security cameras.

They are especially interested in a dark SUV spotted near the trailhead around the time Dr. Monroe’s car was found. Police are asking anyone with information, even if it seems minor, to come forward.
