Nathalie Neuherz never set out to become a professional photographer. Yet it was in the unassuming presence of her beloved French Bulldog, Flash, that her life pivoted. On casual trips and weekend outings, Nathalie snapped countless photos of her four-legged friend. In 2017, Nathalie bought her first camera for one reason: Flash. She photographed him constantly and everywhere, building a personal collection of candid, heartwarming moments. But in August 2021, Flash had to be put down. The loss was overwhelming.
“After Flash passed away, my camera no longer felt important. I used it less and less,” she remembers.
Everything changed in March 2024. Katherine saw potential in Nathalie’s old photos—especially the ones of Flash—and encouraged her to revisit photography with fresh eyes. It wasn’t a casual suggestion. It was the final push Nathalie needed to believe in her talent.
By July 2024, she took the bold step of officially becoming a freelance photographer. It was a significant shift: no fixed salary, no guarantees, just her camera and her ambition. She dove headfirst into the competitive world of freelance photography—armed with enthusiasm, a unique eye, and an unwavering belief in her craft. But with this independence came challenges.
The road wasn’t smooth. Nathalie quickly discovered that freelance life means hearing “no” more often than “yes.” Pitch after pitch met silence—or worse, rejection.
“Rejection is okay,” she says. “It’s not personal—it’s just part of the journey.”
Instead of letting it defeat her, Nathalie used it as fuel to grow, improve, and persist. Every hurdle shaped her approach and refined her creative vision.
A defining moment came in October 2024. While vacationing in Los Angeles, Nathalie had the opportunity to shoot Katherine at Santa Monica Beach. It was a foggy afternoon filled with movement, laughter, and emotion.
“It felt right. The light, the ocean, the connection between us—it was a shoot I’ll never forget,” Nathalie recalls.
Those images weren’t just beautiful—they were powerful. Several magazines took notice, reaching out to feature her work. It was a sudden shift from small-town beginnings to international recognition.
The Santa Monica shoot wasn’t just a creative highlight—it was a breakthrough. For Nathalie, it marked the moment her dream started to feel real.
What began with snapshots of a French bulldog had blossomed into something bigger. After the Santa Monica success, publications began featuring her images. Commissions and freelance gigs followed. Ongoing collaborations emerged.
And through it all, Nathalie remained grounded in her roots, still living in southern Germany and balancing her day job in retail.
“I’ve already achieved a lot in a short time,” she says. “But I know there’s still so much waiting for me.”
