William Fujioka, chair of the museum’s board, noted the troubling parallel between that history and the federal presence during the event.

Recent operations have targeted places like Home Depot stores, car washes, and MacArthur Park, often accompanied by National Guard deployments. These moves have drawn protests, criticism from local leaders, and legal challenges.
Carlos Franco, a fellow vendor, said the man detained was simply making a delivery. “He was just doing his normal delivery. It’s pretty sad,” he remarked.
Governor Newsom addressed the agents directly during his speech, questioning whether the operation’s timing was truly a coincidence and suggesting that political figures in Washington had authorized it deliberately.
Mayor Bass spoke to reporters after the event, stating that there was “no way this was a coincidence” and arguing that it did nothing to improve public safety in the city.
The incident has added fuel to the already tense political atmosphere surrounding California’s redistricting plan. Supporters of Newsom may view the raid as an intimidation tactic, while critics could see it as an unrelated law enforcement action. The upcoming November vote will serve as a public test of the governor’s proposal.
