The Philadelphia 76ers may be facing a major setback just weeks before the NBA playoffs, as rising star guard Tyrese Maxey has gone down with an injury. Maxey, who has emerged as one of the league’s most exciting young talents, suffered the injury during the team’s recent game against the San Antonio Spurs. While the exact timeline for his return remains uncertain, fans and analysts alike are holding their breath, fearing that the Sixers’ postseason dreams could take a major hit.
The moment came in the third quarter of the Sixers’ 133-126 overtime win over the Spurs. Maxey was driving to the basket when he appeared to land awkwardly on his right leg after contact with Spurs forward Julian Champagnie. He immediately grabbed his leg and limped to the sideline, clearly in pain.
He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game, and the team classified it as a right hip injury. While Maxey has dealt with minor injuries in the past, the look on his face and the concern from teammates suggested this could be more serious.
The injury comes at a terrible time for Maxey, who is having a breakout season. After James Harden was traded to the Clippers earlier in the year, Maxey stepped into a bigger role—and he’s exceeded all expectations. Averaging over 25 points per game, Maxey has not only become Joel Embiid’s right-hand man but also a potential All-NBA candidate.
His speed, scoring ability, and improved playmaking have made him one of the most valuable young guards in the league. He’s also a fan favorite in Philly, known for his energy, positive attitude, and work ethic.
“Tyrese is the heart and soul of this team,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said after the game. “We’re hopeful it’s not too serious, but we’ll know more soon.”
As of Monday morning, the Sixers have not released a full update on Maxey’s condition. He underwent imaging over the weekend, and results are reportedly still being evaluated. A team source said the initial concern is that it may be a hip flexor strain, but additional testing is needed to determine the grade and severity.
Typically, a mild strain could sideline a player for 1–2 weeks, while more serious strains can take 3–6 weeks or even longer, especially for guards who rely heavily on quick movement and explosiveness.
The Sixers are expected to provide an official update later this week.
The timing could not be worse. The Sixers are already without their MVP big man Joel Embiid, who has been out since late January with a knee injury. While Embiid is ramping up toward a return before the playoffs, the Sixers have been trying to stay afloat without their two biggest stars now.
Without Embiid and Maxey, the Sixers’ offense takes a serious hit. Maxey has carried much of the scoring load in Embiid’s absence, and without him, the team will have to lean more heavily on veterans like Tobias Harris and Kelly Oubre Jr., as well as backup guards De’Anthony Melton and Cameron Payne.
The injury sparked an emotional reaction from Sixers fans on social media, many of whom feel like the team is cursed with bad luck during key moments.
“First Embiid, now Maxey? This can’t be happening again,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another said, “I love Tyrese. He plays so hard every game. Hoping it’s not serious.”
Many fans pointed out that the Sixers were in a similar spot last season, when injuries to Embiid and Harden derailed a promising playoff run. The team has not reached the Eastern Conference Finals since 2001, despite having some of the league’s most talented players over the past several years.
With the NBA regular season winding down, the Sixers are currently sitting in the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference, but only a few games separate them from dropping into the play-in tournament zone. Every game counts now, and without Maxey, the margin for error shrinks even more.
The Sixers have about eight games left in the regular season, and their schedule includes tough matchups against teams like the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Orlando Magic—all of whom are fighting for playoff positioning.
If Maxey misses the rest of the regular season, and Embiid isn’t back at full strength, the Sixers could find themselves in serious trouble. Dropping to the 7th or 8th seed would force them to play a win-or-go-home game just to reach the first round.
Despite the uncertainty, Maxey’s teammates remain optimistic and supportive. After the game, Patrick Beverley called Maxey “one of the toughest guys I’ve played with,” and added, “I know he’s going to fight to get back as soon as possible.”
Joel Embiid, who was seen courtside during the game, also spoke briefly to reporters. “Tyrese means everything to us. I know he’s going to be okay. He’s strong, he’s young, and he’s got the heart of a lion.”
That positive energy reflects Maxey’s own approach. Known for always having a smile on his face, he later posted on Instagram with a simple message: “Appreciate all the love. I’ll be back soon. God’s plan always!”
As the team waits for Maxey’s official diagnosis, all eyes are on the Sixers’ next few games. Coach Nurse may need to experiment with different lineups, possibly giving more minutes to Jaden Springer or even bringing Buddy Hield back into the rotation in a bigger role.
If Maxey’s injury is mild, there’s hope he could return by the end of the regular season or at least for the first round of the playoffs. But if it’s more serious, the Sixers may have to prepare for life without him for a little while.
The Sixers’ medical staff has been under the microscope in recent years due to repeated injuries to stars, and fans are anxiously awaiting clear communication this time around.
Tyrese Maxey’s injury is more than just a short-term problem for the 76ers—it’s a blow to the heart of the team. He’s become a cornerstone for the franchise and a symbol of hope for fans. With the playoffs fast approaching and Joel Embiid still on the mend, the Sixers’ season could hang in the balance.
The good news is that Maxey’s early signs suggest this may not be a season-ending injury. But in a year where the East is loaded with tough competition and very little room for error, every game matters.
For now, all of Philadelphia is holding its breath and hoping their young star will be back on the floor soon—doing what he does best: flying past defenders, draining big shots, and lighting up the Wells Fargo Center with that electric energy only Tyrese Maxey brings.
